Studies on bilingual people have shown that both languages are active in their minds at all times, engaged in a comparative and competitive dance even when only one language is required. My sense of belonging moves in a similar duet. While my mind houses two languages, the heart keeps two homes; one immediately present, the other one in its shadow. The former perceived on the grounds of the latter, they are joined in a silent conversation.
In the spring of 2015 I returned to the Czech Republic and explored the streets of Prague and the landscape near my hometown with my camera and with eyes that learned to see in Maine. Back in the quiet space of the darkroom I printed the negatives capturing the streets and fields of my homeland alongside the forest and ocean images from Maine. Each evokes a lovely memory, dispersed pieces forming a harmonious whole, reflecting the dialogue inside my mind and heart.
